Venting your microwave meal.
Pretty much every microwave frozen meal I have says, "Slit the top film with a knife to vent." I look at it and then peel up the corner. I'm not going to get a knife out for that.Is there a difference between peeling up the corner and slitting with a knife? Am I losing 20 or 30 International Flavor Units (IFUs - I just made that up) by not slitting it with a knife? It's so much easier to just peel the corner that I don't know why they don't just tell me to peel the corner. Do they perhaps have a partnership with the Big Knife companies?

Co-found of Saffire women's blues trio dies in Va.
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (AP) ? Pianist and vocalist Ann Rabson, co-founder of the trio Saffire_The Uppity Blues Women, died Wednesday in Virginia after a battle with cancer, her label announced. She was 67.
A barrelhouse blues pianist, Rabson was also a songwriter and guitarist. She recorded eight albums with Saffire and one solo CD for Alligator Records. She made three solo albums for other labels.
Rabson was best known for her work with Saffire, which she formed with one of her guitar students, Gaye Adegbalola. Andra Faye McIntosh completed the trio, which had a loyal following. Saffire disbanded in 2009 after 25 years of performing.
While Rabson didn't start playing piano until she was 35, DownBeat magazine said she played "bluesy, honky-tonk piano with staggering authority."
A native New Yorker who grew up in Ohio, she moved to Fredericksburg in 1971 where she gave music lessons on the side. Her father gave her a guitar when she was 17 and she idolized blues greats such as Memphis Minnie and Big Bill Broonzy.
"Blues speaks to me directly," she said. "It wasn't a choice. I was drawn to it naturally, sort of like a sheepdog with sheep."
Alligator president Bruce Iglauer, a friend and producer, described Rabson as a "delightful, smart and funny person" and a dedicated champion of the blues. "We were blessed to have known her," he said in a statement.
Rabson had continued to perform over the last few years, appearing on recordings with Pinetop Perkins and Ani DiFranco. Her most recent was "Not Alone," recorded in 2012 for VizzTone Records.
Rabson is survived by her husband, George Newman, her daughter and a granddaughter.

A Coolpix for every budget? Nikon's got you covered with this latest lineup of compact point-and-shoots. The S9500, priced at $350, offers a standard mid-range lineup of pocketable-cam specs. There's an 18.1-megapixel 1/2.3-inch BSI CMOS sensor, an impressive 22x 25-550mm zoom lens and a 3-inch OLED display. As you might expect from a camera in this price range, Nikon threw in embedded WiFi and GPS, letting you geotag and upload your pics directly from the camera. Google pledges fight over access to users' email

Google will lobby?Washington this?year?to make it harder for law enforcement authorities to gain access to emails and other digital messages.
In a blog post on Monday, linked to Data Privacy Day, Google's chief legal officer, David Drummond, said the tech giant, in coalition with many other powerful tech companies, will try to convince Congress to update a 1986 privacy protection law.
He cited data, shared last week, showing that government requests for Google's user data increased more than 70 percent since 2009.
In 2012, Google said, it received 16,407 requests for user data affecting 31,072 users or accounts, more than half of them accompanied by a subpoena.
"We're a law-abiding company, and we don't want our services to be used in harmful ways. But it's just as important that laws protect you against overly broad requests for your personal information," Drummond said in the post.
The U.S. Electronic Communications Privacy Act, passed in the early days of the Internet, does not require government investigators to have a search warrant when requesting access to old emails and messages that are stored online, providing less protection for them than, say, letters stored in a desk drawer or even messages saved on a computer's hard drive.
The current system also makes complex distinctions, many disputed in courts, between emails saved as drafts online, in transit, unopened or opened. Some of them are to be released with subpoenas, which have a lower threshold than search warrants as they often do not involve a judge.
A warrant is generally approved by a judge if investigators have "probable cause" to believe that their search is likely to turn up information related to a crime.
Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and popular social media site Twitter ? among others ? have resisted turning over customer data.
They have put in place policies, based on the constitutional protection from unreasonable searches, that require search warrants for access to content of private communications.
Privacy activists say the outdated law should be reformed to extend the constitutional right to privacy online, but legislation limiting government requests will not face an easy road.
Last year, Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy, who chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee, introduced a bill that would have updated the current law.
It triggered a wave of concerns from the police and FBI that new restrictions would impede crime investigations and possibly endanger victims.
"After three decades, it is essential that Congress update ECPA to ensure that this critical law keeps pace with new technologies and the way Americans use and store email today," Leahy said in a statement on Monday.
His privacy legislation died in Congress last year after his counterpart in the House of Representatives, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, a Republican, drafted another version of that bill, which also tackled other issues but stripped out privacy reform language.
Last year, Goodlatte said he was willing to consider the privacy law reform, but that the timeline then was too short for a "thorough examination."
Leahy has now included the change of privacy laws as one of his top priorities this year.

France: Islamists could rise in Syria
PARIS (Reuters) - France's foreign minister said on Monday Syria risks falling into the hands of Islamist militant groups if supporters of the Syrian opposition do not do more to help it in a 22-month-old revolt against President Bashar al-Assad.
Addressing the opening of a conference in Paris with senior members of the Syrian National Coalition, Laurent Fabius said the meeting must focus on making the opposition politically and militarily cohesive to encourage international assistance.
"Facing the collapse of a state and society, it is Islamist groups that risk gaining ground if we do not act as we should," he said. "We cannot let a revolution that started as a peaceful and democratic protest degenerate into a conflict of militias."
Western concern over the growing strength of jihadist militants fighting autonomously in the disorganized ranks of anti-Assad rebel forces is rising. This has hindered international aid to the moderate Syrian National Coalition opposition and may push it more into the arms of conservative Muslim backers, diplomatic sources say.
The meeting, which brought together Western and Arab nations and the three vice-presidents of the coalition, aims to tackle the lack of cohesion that has led to broken promises of aid.
Coalition vice-president Riad Seif said "time is not on our side" and that the opposition no longer wanted pledges of support that would not be followed through on.
"We need an interim or transitional government to provide assistance to millions of Syrians in liberated zones and to help bring the collapse of the (Assad) regime," he said.
"From the beginning we said we should be based in Syria, but so far we haven't received any money to run a government."
HALF A BILLION DOLLARS
Since its formation in November, the coalition has failed to gain traction on the ground in Syria and its credibility has been undermined by its inability to secure arms and cash.
Seif said the coalition lacked the financial or military means to set up within Syria and support civilians on the ground. "We are looking with our friends at how we can protect the liberated zones with defensive weapons and we are discussing how to get billions of dollars to create a budget," he said.
"But if we don't have this budget there is no point having a government. It makes no sense."
George Sabra, another coalition vice-president, said the coalition needed at least $500 million to launch a government.
But its disunity - it failed last week to form a transitional government [ID:nL6N0AQ0RX] - has deterred the West from boosting assistance, especially sophisticated arms and ammunition insurgents are crying out for.
"We also need weapons. We needed them from the first minute," Sabra said. "At the last meeting of Friends of Syria, they recognized our rights to defend ourselves. (But) what does that mean if we cannot provide help to victims?"
The insurgents have seized territory in the north and east of Syria, including several border crossings, and made some inroads into Assad's dominance in major cities. But Assad's air power and far superior weaponry have limited rebel advances.
France said last week there was no sign Assad was about to be overthrown, reversing previous statements that he could not hold out long, while Jordan's King Abdullah said the authoritarian Syrian leader would consolidate his grip for now.
Fabius said the Paris meeting had three objectives: to address the needs of the vulnerable Syrian population, pursue internal structuring, bring opposition fighting units of the Free Syrian Army under its political authority and prepare the post-Assad transition.
However, he sidestepped the question of arming the rebels, underlining the wariness of Western countries about spreading weapons to Islamists in Syria and across the volatile region.
The European Union is set to review its arms embargo on Syria at the end of February.

Fateful B-52 flight revealed deadly weakness
ELEPHANT MOUNTAIN, Maine (AP) ? Flying low over snowy terrain on a Cold War training mission, Lt. Col. Dan Bulli's massive B-52 bomber hit turbulence that shook the plane so violently that he couldn't read the gauges. Pulling back on the yoke and pushing forward on the throttle, he tried to fly out of the severe wind. Then there was a loud bang.
Moving at about 325 mph, the unarmed bomber banked, nose down, toward the unforgiving winter wilderness below. Unable to control the plane, Bulli signaled for the crew to eject.
They had seconds to save themselves.
Today, the B-52 Stratofortress is a legendary aircraft, one of the longest-serving in U.S. military history, even flying missions in Afghanistan and Iraq. The planes will remain in service for years to come. But it would not have become the workhorse it is without one disastrous flight 50 years ago next week, and a similar one six days later in New Mexico, that helped to underscore a deadly structural weakness.
"When you're flying combat aircraft, you're pushing your aircraft to the edge" to simulate combat, said Jeff Underwood, historian for the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force in Ohio. "It's very dangerous and the air crew knows it."
The fateful flight originated on Jan. 24, 1963, at Westover Air Force Base in Massachusetts. The crew was learning to use terrain avoidance radar, designed to help the pilot fly at treetop level to deliver a nuclear strike. Radar advances by the Soviets forced the aircraft with a 185-foot wingspan to fly low to the ground to evade detection, causing unexpected structural fatigue, Underwood said.
The crew had a choice of two routes, one over Maine and the other over North Carolina.
Maine was selected because of better weather.
Bulli, now 90, was an experienced pilot with 9,000 flight hours, responsible for overseeing proficiency of other B-52 pilots and crews.
Others, including two instructors, joined the flight. Gerald Adler, a navigator, took the seat of the electronic warfare officer, one of only three on the plane that ejects upward during an emergency, along with the pilot and co-pilot. Remaining crew had to eject downward or bail out.
The flight started out as routine. Powered by eight jet engines and capable of carrying up to 70,000 pounds of conventional munitions, the B-52 approached rural Greenville, 150 miles from Portland. Gusts coming off the 3,000- to 4,000-foot-high mountains buffeted the plane with moderate turbulence, Bulli recalled.
Eventually, the turbulence became extreme.
"The instrument panel was vibrating so badly that I couldn't read the dials. I couldn't interpret the radar returns because it was juggling so bad. It was the worst turbulence I had ever encountered," the pilot said.
After hearing what sounded like an explosion ? he later learned the vertical stabilizer had broken off ? Bulli had just seconds to determine whether the plane was still flyable. Unable to control the aircraft, he ordered the crew to bail.
The B-52 crashed into a mountainside, killing six crew members who couldn't escape. A seventh, the co-pilot, died after slamming into a tree.
Bulli shot his ejection seat into the air, bursting through the escape hatch. He smashed his foot on the instrument panel but cleared the aircraft. His parachute snagged a tree, and he ended up dangling 30 feet above the ground.
Adler's parachute failed to deploy because he remained strapped in his ejection seat, and he tumbled through the air before crashing through trees and into the deep snow, which slowed his impact enough to save his life.
The harsh landing broke ribs and fractured Adler's skull. But worst of all, it crushed his survival kit, leaving no access to the sleeping bag to protect himself from the cold. He pulled out the unused parachute and wrapped himself in it. Bulli eventually lowered himself to the ground, dug a hole in the snow, and climbed into his sleeping bag.
The two survivors remember a strange sense of quiet, interrupted only by wind whistling over the mountainside. Neither remembers the sound of the plane hitting the mountain.
Not knowing the fate of the others, or each other, Adler and Bulli settled in for a frigid night in shoulder-high snow. As darkness descended, the temperature plummeted, eventually reaching more than 20 below.
Their fight for survival wasn't over.
For 20 hours, they waited.
The region where the plane crashed remains wilderness, part of the vast North Woods that inspired naturalist Henry David Thoreau. Rescuers had to use helicopters, snowshoes and primitive snowmobiles to reach the wreckage.
"This is still the last frontier east of the Mississippi. There are fewer people living in Piscataquis County per square mile than anywhere east of the Mississippi," said Greenville police Chief Jeff Pomerleau.
Eventually, the survivors were found. Adler had severe frostbite. He was unconscious for five days and eventually his leg was amputated because of gangrene. All told, he spent 14 months in a hospital.
Later, he left the Air Force as a captain to start a new life as lawyer and a city councilman in California.
After recovering, Bulli continued to fly B-52s. At one point, he returned to Maine to serve at Loring Air Force Base. He retired as a colonel from the Air Force in Nebraska, where he lives.
Coming at the height of the Cold War, the flight showed that risks and sacrifices even outside of combat were significant. The crash left nine children without fathers and six women without husbands, Adler said.
"People who're killed in peacetime are often forgotten. Memorial Day events often forget them. Veterans Day events often forget them," said Adler, 81, who lives outside Davis, Calif.
But the crashes in Maine and New Mexico helped to make the B-52 the reliable aircraft it is today by revealing a fatal weakness in an aircraft that wasn't designed for low-level flying: The vertical stabilizer snapped off under certain conditions.
Fifty years after the crash, much of the debris remains on Elephant Mountain. Torn pieces of riveted metal. Wing chunks with hydraulic tubes dangling. Parts of the fuselage. Bundles of wire. Wheels and strut assemblies. The 40-foot-tall vertical stabilizer remains where it landed, 1? miles from the other wreckage.
About 10 miles away, at the clubhouse for the Moosehead Riders snowmobile club, newspaper clippings, Bulli's parachute and Adler's ejection seat are on display. The club has held ceremonies for 20 years at the site and will hold this year's on Saturday, ahead of the anniversary. Pomerleau has taken over organizing the remembrances from another club member, Pete Pratt, who helped keep memory of the flight alive for years.
Pratt has been to the crash site a hundred times, but it's still an emotional experience. Tears welled in his eyes on a recent visit.
"It's a very solemn place," said Pomerleau, who joined Pratt at the site. "You think of the families, the wives who lost their husbands, the kids who lost their fathers, the grandchildren who heard the stories. There's so much to absorb."

Kudos to the President's Inaugural Committee
Just a few months ago President Barack Obama seemed pretty excited to have Cardinal Timothy Dolan, an opponent of gay "marriage" offer the closing prayer at the Democratic National Convention. At that time, the Catholic vote was a point of concern in the election.
But it would seem the election is over. And it's now being reported that one of the pastors chosen to deliver the benediction at President Obama's inauguration withdrew because he once said homosexuality is a sin. This comment caused quite the ruckus from gay-rights groups and certain left-of-center websites. The pastor was even labeled "anti-gay."
And it was the promise of escalating outrage that caused Rev. Louie Giglio, pastor of the Passion City Church in Atlanta, to withdraw. He was afraid that his presence would become a distraction.
But I have to wonder if it would have been a distraction or a clarifying event? I give huzzahs to the Inaugural staff who seemingly pushed Rev. Giglio out the door. I prefer clarity on such issues.
Rev. Giglio said at some point in the 1990's that homosexuality was a sin. (Of course, the inclination itself is not but I'm pretty sure he meant the act.) He also said that those with the inclination towards homosexuality should turn to Christ for help.
Insert gasps here. A Christian!!! This was a very clear statement from Rev. Giglio about his beliefs. Kudos. Now, if you read the statement from the inaugural committee it's pretty apparent that the back of Rev. Giglio's pants have a POTUS shaped boot mark on them. They said:
We were not aware of Pastor Giglio?s past comments at the time of his selection and they don?t reflect our desire to celebrate the strength and diversity of our country at this Inaugural. Pastor Giglio was asked to deliver the benediction in large part for his leadership in combating human trafficking around the world. As we now work to select someone to deliver the benediction, we will ensure their beliefs reflect this administration?s vision of inclusion and acceptance for all Americans.
Inclusion and acceptance for all Americans? Well, it would seem not all. In short, they said we're kicking him out to show how inclusive we are. But at least they were clear. Huzzahs for clarity. They liked the part of his Christianity that was against human trafficking but not so much the part about homosexuality. Clarity.
What I don't like is that Rev. Giglio is saying he withdrew from the Inaugural. This surely is not something he wanted to do. I wish that instead of being accommodating, he should've made them kick him out. Look, when I was in college I was kicked out of plenty of places. And on those occasions, I made it clear I wasn't withdrawing for the evening. I didn't go quietly. There was yelling and feet pulling and hands holding onto door frames. In short, it was clear to all what the consequences were for violating certain rules of behavior. And many patrons better understood the rules of behavior because I, willing to be a cautionary tale for the benefit of my classmates, was being dragged out by bouncers.
But at least things were clear. I wish Rev. Giglio made it clear he was forced out. That would certainly clarify the conversation, wouldn't it? I'd like to have a discussion about what "inclusion" actually means in today's society. I'd like to be able to discuss "sin."
While Christians have been silent and accommodating for years, it seems that in thiscountry where everything is allowed, one of the only remaining sins is acting as a Christian in public. We now live in an odd time where imaginary rights take precedence over delineated rights such as the right to an abortion takes precedence over the right to life and more recently the right to contracept took precedence over the right to religious freedom.
Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli recently said about resistance to the HHS mandate that we need to be willing to go to jail to defend our religious liberty. He said, ?And what I mean by that is people need to see this play out all the way to its logical conclusion. And, this guy is making them do it. God bless him.?

Afghans terrified of total U.S. pullout
KABUL (Reuters) - Afghan lawmakers said on Wednesday disaster and civil war would follow if Washington pushed ahead with a suggestion to withdraw all its troops from the country after 2014.
The White House said a day earlier it was considering the so-called "zero option" of a complete pullout - despite earlier recommendations from the top military commander in Afghanistan to keep soldiers there to help the government.
That option and the angry reaction from Afghan officials are likely to dominate talks between President Barack Obama and his Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai in Washington on Friday.
The meeting was already likely to be tense, given ongoing strains in their relationship over the war.
"If Americans pull out all of their troops without a plan, the civil war of the 1990s would repeat itself," said Naeem Lalai, an outspoken lawmaker from volatile Kandahar province, the birthplace of the Taliban.
"It (full withdrawal) will pave the way for the Taliban to take over militarily," Lalai told Reuters.
When the Soviets left Afghanistan in 1989 after a decade-long war, financial aid dried up and the Afghan communist government collapsed, leading to infighting between warlords. A civil war paved the way for the Taliban's rise to power.
The United States has about 68,000 troops there and that number was already expected to reduce sharply ahead of December 31 2014 - the official end of the NATO-led combat mission in the country.
NATO and its partners are racing against the clock to train up Afghanistan's 350,000-strong security forces though questions remain over how they well they will be able to tackle insurgents in the face of intensifying violence.
Many leading Afghan officials had assumed some U.S. troops would stay.
"If American forces leave Afghanistan without properly training the Afghan security forces, and equipping them, it would be a disaster," said influential member of parliament Mirwais Yasini.
Member of parliament Shukria Barekzai said a total withdrawal after 2014 would be equivalent to the United States "accepting defeat".
The Taliban said it was still considering whether to respond to the White House statement when contacted by Reuters on Wednesday.
"It's very speculative and we are not commenting for now," said its spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid.
On Saturday the group reiterated its call for the immediate removal of all foreign troops from Afghanistan.
U.S. Deputy National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes said the complete withdrawal was "an option that we would consider" on Tuesday.
He made clear that a decision on post-2014 troop levels is not expected for months and will be made based on two U.S. security objectives in Afghanistan - denying a safe haven to al Qaeda and ensuring Afghan forces are trained and equipped so that they, and not foreign forces, can secure the nation.
Washington officials have privately said the White House is seeking a post-2014 presence of between 3,000 and 9,000 troops, which is significantly less than the 6,000 to 15,000 number given by the top commander, U.S. General John Allen.

Cruise was in Seoul on Thursday to promote "Jack Reacher," a thriller adapting Lee Child's novel "One Shot," part of the best-selling series about a mysterious ex-military investigator.
Appearing at a news conference with director Christopher McQuarrie and co-star Rosamund Pike, Cruise said, "It was so much fun making the film."
He said the wit of the movie and the charm of his character were elements that made the film fun.
Pike, who played James Bond girl Miranda Frost in "Die Another Day" in 2002, said she and Cruise enjoyed good on-screen chemistry ? something she said she "never thought" she'd say.
"You can even like a guy very much, like an actor very much, and there isn't any chemistry," she said but added, "It was a great relationship to play. It was a lot of fun."
Cruise was making his fifth trip to South Korea and received honorary citizenship in the city of Busan on Thursday evening. "Jack Reacher" opens in South Korea next Thursday. The 50-year-old actor was in Tokyo on Wednesday for the film's Japan premiere.

Mali Islamists capture strategic town, residents flee
BAMAKO (Reuters) - Islamist rebels drove the Malian army out of the strategic northern town of Konna on Thursday, residents said, in the fiercest fighting since militant groups seized control of northern Mali nine months ago.
The fall of Konna, about 600 km (375 miles) northeast of the capital Bamako, was a major setback to government forces which had said earlier on Thursday they were making headway against the alliance of al Qaeda-linked rebels.
Western and regional governments are keen to dislodge the Islamists from a desert zone of northern Mali larger than France which they captured in April, amid concerns they may use it as a launch pad to stage attacks.
Konna was the last buffer between the rebels and Mopti, about 50 km (30 miles) south, which is the main town in the region and is seen as the gateway to the country's north.
After hours of gun battles, heavily armed Islamist fighters paraded in triumph through Konna's center, saying they would push on to take Mopti and its neighboring town of Sevare, residents said.
"We took the barracks and we control all of the town of Konna," MUJWA rebel group spokesman Oumar Ould Hamaha told Reuters. "The soldiers fled, abandoning their heavy weapons and armored vehicles."
News of the fall of Konna sowed panic in Mopti and Sevare, the latter the site of a large military barracks and airport. The towns lie at the crossroads between Mali's desert north and the greener, more populous south.
"We have received the order to evacuate," said the local head of a U.S. aid agency. "We have already pulled all our personnel and material out of Mopti."
While a U.N.-sanctioned intervention by African troops is unlikely before September due to logistical constraints, world powers could decide to act sooner, a U.N. diplomat said.
"If the offensive continues, I think there will be an emergency decision by the international community," U.N. Special Envoy to the Sahel, Romano Prodi, said during a visit to Bamako on Thursday, without elaborating.
France said on its U.N. mission's Twitter feed that it had requested an emergency closed-door meeting of the U.N. Security Council on Thursday to discuss the "deterioration of the situation in Mali".
RIVAL CLAIMS
Former colonial power France has been among the most outspoken advocates of an African-led military intervention. Many in Mali's military have also been keen to launch a campaign to reverse their rout by the militants in April.
An army official had earlier said that soldiers had retaken Douentza, a town about 120 km east of Konna, which has been in the hands of Islamists since September.
But residents and a rebel spokesman said Islamists had held their positions inside Douentza, exchanging fire with government troops stationed just outside.
The renewed fighting could derail hopes of a breakthrough at peace talks between the Malian government, the rebels and separatist Tuaregs which were scheduled to start in Burkina Faso on Thursday but have been postponed until January 21.
Djibril Bassole, Burkina Faso's foreign minister and regional mediator in the crisis, on Thursday called on the parties to respect a ceasefire deal agreed on December 4 and said the fighting posed a threat to talks.
"The climate of confidence has been greatly degraded, and I am very worried that these talks will not bear fruit," he told reporters in Burkina Faso's capital Ouagadougou.
Ansar Dine, one of the main rebel factions, last week ended its ceasefire because of the plan for military intervention.
Once an example of democracy and development in turbulent West Africa, Mali was plunged into crisis by a March 2012 coup which allowed Tuareg rebels to seize the north, demanding an independent homeland. Their rebellion was hijacked by Islamists.
Bickering among Mali's political elite over a roadmap to end the post-coup transition is causing paralysis and damaging efforts to unite the country with elections to choose a replacement for a caretaker government.
Thousands of people took to the streets in Bamako on Wednesday calling for an end to political crisis, blocking the city's two main bridges. The government responded on Thursday by shutting down schools in Bamako and Kati until further notice.

Authorities are investigating whether a Sharpsburg recreation director accused of having sex with a 15-year-old boy was similarly involved with other minors with whom she talked on her cellphone.
?Police plan to interview other individuals who have had contact with this woman,? said Mike Manko, a spokesman for Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen A. Zappala Jr.
Neighbors of Susan Sundo, 45, said her arrest shocked them. Sundo volunteered in the canteen at the Aspinwall Area Baseball Association, where two of her children play, they said.
?It?s a shame. I did not know her. I have seen her and know that her boys play baseball,? said Edward Echnat, a neighbor.
Her neighbors said Sundo, a married mother of three boys ages 6 to 14, accompanied her children to baseball tournaments in Puerto Rico.
County police arrested Sundo on Tuesday on charges of corruption of a minor, statutory sexual assault and related felonies, accusing her of carrying on the sexual relationship for six months. She is being held in the Allegheny County Jail.
Court officials said it was not clear if she has an attorney. No one answered the phone or door at her home.
?She will not be back in the canteen,? said Bill Hudic, president of the Aspinwall Area Baseball Association.
Hudic said he did not believe the boy involved with Sundo was a player in the Aspinwall league. Sundo?s husband complained to police about his wife?s relationship with the teenager, said Sharpsburg Mayor Richard Panza.
?She was relieved of her duties as of last night. Everybody was pretty surprised by this. We are in shock,? Panza said.
A criminal complaint states the boy repeatedly spent the night in the Sundo household and entered her bedroom several times wearing only underwear. He slept in Sundo?s bedroom as recently as Dec. 16, police said.
Sundo?s husband, whom authorities did not identify, told police that the boy got a large number of text messages and phone calls from Sundo starting about six months ago.
While at the Sundo home, the boy said, she often sent him text messages encouraging him to meet her for sex in the attic or basement, the complaint states.
When Sundo?s husband drove to the boy?s home to confront him and his parents, the teen told him that they had sex for several months ? in her home and in a sport utility vehicle parked in an Aspinwall lot, the complaint states.
Jim Donahoe, head of Aspinwall Council?s parks committee, said background checks are standard for volunteers in youth sports.
?They run background checks on any new people,? Donahoe said.
A review of online criminal records showed no arrests in Pennsylvania for Sundo.

Auto tech gets a share of the spotlight at CES

CES is the largest trade show in the country, and this year organizers are reporting record turnout at an even featuring 3,250 exhibitors spread out across 1.9 million square feet of exhibition space at the Las Vegas Convention Center. And that doesn?t include spin-off gatherings scattered all across Sin City.
Traditionally, the show has focused on televisions, audio systems, computers and smartphones, but in recent years automotive technology has come to play a more important role. More than a dozen different automakers have staked out a presence at the 2013 CES, along with scores of hardware suppliers, app makers and other vendors looking to make inroads into the transportation industry.?

Ford has been one of the most active in the field, and CEO Alan Mulally has been as frequent a guest as Microsoft founder Bill Gates in recent years. While Mulally has remained in Detroit this time around, preparing for next week?s Detroit Auto Show, Ford is again staking out a highly visible role. The maker is showing off a new developer program it hopes will make it easier for companies like Glympse to come up with apps that can be used with the Sync system.
Enhancing the driving experience
Paul Mascarenas, Ford's?chief technology officer,?said the company?is "inviting software developers to deliver thoughtful, meaningful solutions that will enhance the driving experience." They?ll be added to a growing list that already includes Stitcher ratio, Pandora, iHeartRadio and, in the coming weeks, a service dubbed Kaliki, where stories from magazines like Men?s Fitness and Shape will be read out loud.
Ford is just one of many automakers looking to expand its lineup of apps. But there are plenty of other ways manufacturers are using CES to show off their new in-vehicle technologies.?

Hyundai?s Blue Link system already offers a variety of connectivity, convenience and safety solutions, and the maker will add the next-generation Google Maps API to ensure that its navigation database remains up-to-date. That would eliminate the need to regularly order and install expensive DVD-based map updates.
Like most of its competitors, Hyundai claims its latest Dragon Drive update will improve the ability of its infotainment system to recognize natural voice commands to find music, check the weather or ask for directions. And by tapping into Apple?s Siri concierge system, motorists who own a new iPhone will be able to easily?find the best restaurant after the show ends.
Automakers have long relied on proprietary hardware and software systems, but that creates a conundrum: technology that is typically expensive and often out-of-date. By linking to smartphones and using more open-architecture based technologies, makers hope to start moving at a speed closer to that of the consumer electronics industry while also driving down costs. ?

Chrysler is showing off the first dealer-activated navigation system. Instead of ordering the technology at the time of purchase, a motorist could save money up front and later go back to activate the system. The technology will initially be offered on the new Fiat 500L, Dodge Ram 1500 pickup and SRT Viper sports car but will eventually spread to much of the rest of the maker?s lineup.
?With dealer-activated navigation, we are adopting a ?no-customer-left-behind? attitude,? said Marios Zenios, vice president for?Uconnect systems and services for Chrysler.
In all, automotive-related exhibits are taking up about 100,000 square feet of CES exhibition space, a 5 percent increase from 2012, according to organizers.
While much of the emphasis is on infotainment technology, automakers are also exploring more advanced safety and control systems, such as Toyota?s Advanced Automotive Safety Research Vehicle, or AASRV, which the maker is using to test technologies that could serve as ?an intelligent, always-attentive co-pilot whose skills contribute to safer driving,? said Mark Templin, general manager of the Japanese maker?s luxury brand Lexus.
A number of senior industry executives are on hand for this year?s CES, including Audi CEO Wolfgang Durheimer. The German marque?s theme for the show is ?Electronic trends over the next decade,? and that covers everything from advanced interior lighting to autonomous driving technology. ?
Not so coincidentally, Audi announced this week that it was the first luxury automaker to receive a license to publicly test its self-driving vehicle technology on Nevada roads.? The state is the first in the country to formally put in place a registration program for autonomous vehicles ? which some proponents contend could be offered for sale by the end of the decade.
Audi is demonstrating at CES a less complex piloted driving system that will help a motorist steer through congested traffic at speeds of up to nearly 40 mph.
?At Audi, you?d be hard pushed to find an innovation that isn?t related to electronics nowadays,? said Ricky Hudi, Audi's head of electrics/electronics development.
It?s probably no surprise that the auto industry is getting such a grand welcome to CES. The consumer electronic industry has struggled in recent years and is searching for the next ?big thing.? And in-car technology could become just that. Consider that Rhapsody, another music app that Ford will pair with Sync now finds 40 percent of its subscribers using the service on the road.
The most advanced of today?s cars now have more digital technology onboard than you?ll find in the typical home and in the years ahead, that could be true of even the lowest-priced econoboxes. So expect to see automakers stake out an even higher profile at the CES show for years to come.

Magma in mantle has deep impact: Rocks melt at greater depth than once thought
Jan. 9, 2013 ? Magma forms far deeper than geologists previously thought, according to new research at Rice University.
A group led by geologist Rajdeep Dasgupta put very small samples of peridotite under very large pressures in a Rice laboratory to determine that rock can and does liquify, at least in small amounts, as deep as 250 kilometers in the mantle beneath the ocean floor. He said this explains several puzzles that have bothered scientists.
Dasgupta is lead author of the paper to be published this week in Nature.
The mantle is the planet's middle layer, a buffer of rock between the crust -- the top 5 miles or so -- and the core. If one could compress millions of years of observation down to minutes, the mantle would look like a rolling mass of rising and falling material. This slow but constant convection brings materials from deep within the planet to the surface -- and occasionally higher through volcanoes.
The Rice team focused on mantle beneath the ocean because that's where the crust is created and, Dasgupta said, "the connection between the interior and surface world is established." Silicate melts -- aka magma -- rise with the convective currents, cool and spread out to form the ocean crust. The starting point for melting has long been thought to be at 70 kilometers beneath the seafloor.
That has confounded geologists who suspected but could not demonstrate the existence of deeper silicate magma, said Dasgupta, an assistant professor of Earth science at Rice.
Scientists determine the mantle's density by measuring the speed of a seismic wave after an earthquake, from its origin to other points on the planet. These waves travel faster through solids than liquids, and geologists have been surprised to detect waves slowing down through what should be the mantle's express lane. "Seismologists have observed anomalies in their velocity data as deep as 200 kilometers beneath the ocean floor," Dasgupta said. "Based on our work, we show that trace amounts of magma are generated at this depth, which would potentially explain that."
The research also offers clues to the bulk electrical conductivity of the oceanic mantle, he said. "The magma at such depths has a high enough amount of dissolved carbon dioxide that its conductivity is very high," Dasgupta said. "As a consequence, we can explain the conductivity of the mantle, which we knew was very high but always struggled to explain."
Because humans have not yet dug deep enough to sample the mantle directly -- though some are trying -- researchers have to extrapolate data on rocks carried up to the surface. A previous study by Dasgupta determined that melting in Earth's deep upper mantle is caused by the presence of carbon dioxide. The present study shows that carbon not only leads the charge to make carbonate fluid but also helps to make silicate magma at significant depths.
The researchers also found carbonated rock melts at significantly lower temperatures than non-carbonated rock. "This deep melting makes the silicate differentiation of the planet much more efficient than previously thought," Dasgupta said. "Not only that, this deep magma is the main agent to bring all the key ingredients for life -- water and carbon -- to the surface of the Earth."
In Dasgupta's high-pressure lab at Rice, volcanic rocks are windows to the planet's interior. The researchers crushed tiny rock samples that contain carbon dioxide to find out how deep magma forms.
"Our field of research is called experimental petrology," he said. "We have all the necessary tools to simulate very high pressures (up to nearly 750,000 pounds per square inch for these experiments) and temperatures. We can subject small amounts of rock samples to these conditions and see what happens."
They use powerful hydraulic presses to partially melt "rocks of interest" that contain tiny amounts of carbon to simulate what they believe is happening under equivalent pressures in the mantle. "When rocks come from deep in the mantle to shallower depths, they cross a certain boundary called the solidus, where rocks begin to undergo partial melting and produce magmas," Dasgupta said.
"Scientists knew the effect of a trace amount of carbon dioxide or water would be to lower this boundary, but our new estimation made it 150-180 kilometers deeper from the known depth of 70 kilometers," he said.
"What we are now saying is that with just a trace of carbon dioxide in the mantle, melting can begin as deep as around 200 kilometers. And when we incorporate the effect of trace water, the magma generation depth becomes at least 250 kilometers. This does not generate a large amount, but we show the extent of magma generation is larger than previously thought and, as a consequence, it has the capacity to affect geophysical and geochemical properties of the planet as a whole."
Co-authors of the paper are Rice graduate student Ananya Mallik and postdoctoral researcher Kyusei Tsuno; Research Professor Anthony Withers and Marc Hirschmann, the George and Orpha Gibson Chair of Earth and Planetary Sciences, at the University of Minnesota, and Greg Hirth, a professor of geological sciences at Brown University.
