Robotex Avatar for Home and Office eyes-on

Robotex Avatar for Home and Office eyeson

Unless you have loads of cash at your disposal or work for the federal government, chances are you haven't heard of Robotex. The start-up, featured here at CES 2013's Eureka Alley, specializes in creating automated solutions for a variety of security applications (think: SWAT busts, radiation level monitoring, etc.). Traditionally, these high-end robotic solutions carry a price tag in the tens of thousands, but starting this week, Robotex is targeting the consumer market with its Avatar. Set to retail for $299, the blue tank-like bot links up with iOS devices (an Android version's coming in Q1) via USB to communicate with a companion app over Bluetooth 4.0 for remote monitoring. In its current incarnation, the Avatar doesn't do much apart from offering telepresence -- authenticated by the company's servers -- but the robot has been designed to be open source. To that end an SDK and HDK will be made available allowing tinkerers to craft up their own innovations. Unfortunately, due to the abundance of wireless signals here at the show, Robotex's reps weren't able to get the Avatar up and moving around the floor. But in a typical home environment, users should expect to get up to an hour and a half of "driving" time out of the robot. There's no video of the Avatar in action, so instead, check out the gallery below.

Rode iXY Microphone ears on (video)

Rode iXY Microphone hands and ears on

Earlier today, Rode announced its newest addition to its already plentiful lineup of microphones. This time, it's one specialized for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. The microphone uses Apple's outgoing 30 pin adapter (Sorry early adopters), so the user can also use headphones simultaneously while recording at rates of up to 24-bit/96kH. The pair of immovable half inch cardioid condensers are positioned in a 90-degree alignment for proper stereo recording without picking up too much ambient noise. They should also dodge any bi-positional recording issues when recording both guitar and vocals at once.

Amongst the angst of CES, the sound quality seemed good, but what really makes the iXY a legitimate contender is Rode's app. There's two versions: a free lite one and a $5.99 pro version, the latter being extremely adjustable in every aspect of audio recording -- gain, input, boost levels, high/low-pass filter options, equalization effects and many more.

The iXY Microphone is available now for $199, and comes with a foam windshield and carrying case. Rode has mentioned that an iPhone case with a standard hotshoe attachment with pistol grip is in the works, and will arrive in the next few months.

Check out the video past the break, where we compare recordings from the Rode iXY attached to an iPhone and a Rode Videomic Pro on a DSLR.

Studying MSc Marketing at the VU ? The road to success | Study at ...

WindmillsAfter finishing my Bachelor degree in ?European Business Programme? in M?nster (GER) and Portsmouth (UK) in 2010, I decided to undertake an international Master in Marketing. However, the search for an appropriate Master programme?wasn?t?easy. Through a recommendation I finally found the Marketing programme of the Vrije?Universiteit Amsterdam, which seemed to be excellent from an academic point of view. It turned out to be true. It was an intense one-year programme giving the students insights into consumer?behavior,?business models and academic research. The professors provided us with state of the art academic techniques and knowledge, which proved to be very helpful during my job search and current profession.

In hindsight it was a successful and exciting year in the heart of Amsterdam. The VU is a university?that provides you with great career prospects and is situated in a European city worth exploring. I appreciated the individual support and consulting from the professors and the small practical seminars. The effort we put into academic related case studies (?Fa? from Henkel e.g.) definitely paid off. My group and I were lucky to receive the first price in a business challenge in Consumer Marketing.

During the year I met a lot of amazing, clever and fun people from all over the world. A group of my international friends still meets once a year for a reunion ? our next reunion will take place in Berlin.

After my studies in 2011 and a short trip to China I went back to Berlin and applied for a Management position in Online Marketing. With some luck I found a great job as a Junior Marketing Manager at Wine in Black (www.wine-in-black.de), a start-up company selling premium wine online. Not only the product is very attractive, but so are my position and the responsibilities that come with it. My main tasks involve Search Engine Advertising (SEM; Adverts on Google), Conversion rate?Optimization?and Business Intelligence. The tutorials in statistics during the Masters were definitely helpful for the early stages of my job. While learning for statistics, students usually don?t want to admit the usefulness of this field of study. However, in my case, it opened up new possibilities.

Recently, the company expanded to the Netherlands. It is great and much fun working together with my Dutch colleagues. I can also keep up my knowledge and memories about the?lovable?Dutch culture.

Maybe those memories will make me return someday to the country of good cheese and remarkable artists?

Frank Darabont Rewriting Godzilla

godzilla-slice

Gareth Edwards? reboot of Godzilla just got a monster screenwriting boost, but there could be a rampage behind the scenes.? First, the good news: Deadline reports that Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption) has come on board to do a final rewrite on the script, which was previously written by Max Borenstein (Seventh Son).? That?s not intended to slight Borenstein?s script (which I haven?t read), but I have faith in Darabont even though he seemed to struggle with The Walking Dead in its first season.? Nevertheless, the guy has a great track record with Shawshank, The Green Mile, and The Mist.? I assume that his involvement in Godzilla means the entire movie will be about the importance of hope or else monsters will obliterate everything you know and love.

While Darabont is working on bringing drama to the screen, drama is already brewing behind the scenes between Legendary Pictures and producers Dan Lin and Roy Lee.? Hit the jump for more.? Godzilla opens in 3D on May 16, 2014.

Last night, Hitfix reported that Lin and Lee had departed the project, and suggested that the producers were simply too busy with other projects.? Lin is working on Lego, Sherlock Holmes 3, a remake of It, an adaptation of Death Note, and Justice League.? As for Lee, he?s on board with Lin on It and Death Note, and separately he?s doing remakes of Oldboy, Poltergeist, The Woman in Black: Angel of Death, and a Battle Royale TV series.

However, Deadline is saying that the producing duo is in a ?huge battle? with Legendary, who wants to cut Lin and Lee loose with upfront money and no credits or back-end percentage, which is where the real money is made on a franchise like Godzilla.? According to Deadline, the argument stems from Lin and Lee refusing ?to reduce the fees they signed on for when the original deal was made.?? Deadline also hears that Legendary is upset with Lin for talking about the film to ?fantasy film blogs? about Godzilla.? In a related story, Collider is now a ?fantasy film blog? since Lin talked to Steve about Godzilla.

California meteorite reveals secrets thanks to crowdsourcing (+video)

Recently published research describes a collection of meteorite pieces that landed in California in April. The study came about through a group effort dubbed "crowdsourcing" by the lead scientist. ??

By Elizabeth Howell,?Space.com / December 20, 2012

Barely eight months after a fireball lit up California and Nevada skies, the first scientific paper is out examining the meteorites it left behind.

' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

"It was done very quickly," said Peter Jenniskens, a meteor researcher who suddenly found himself managing a small army of volunteers when the Sutter's Mill meteor broke up April 22.

Dozens of scientists jumped to Jenniskens' aid as he?searched for meteorite fragments. But less publicized will be the volunteers who phoned in reports of meteorites, or sent in?pictures and video of the fireball?by e-mail.

Jenniskens' team?commandeered an airship?to search for fragments. Meanwhile, the team caught a lucky break ? Doppler radar information from nearby weather stations showed the track of the meteorite. Adding this data to the pictures and video sent in by volunteers, the scientists could reconstruct the impacting asteroid's early history. [Photos: Fireball Drops Meteorites On California]

According to Jenniskens, the paper, to be published Friday (Dec. 21) in the journal Science,?was made possible by the mass crowdsourcing effort that enabled a large amount of data to be collected in a short time.

"It's all very important, and it's fantastic how this came together," said Jenniskens, a meteor astronomer at the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). "For me, it was personally very exciting."

Peeling back the years

The Sutter's Mill meteorite turned out to be a rare type ? a?carbonaceous chondrite?that contains information about the early stages of the solar system. The meteorite pieces originated in a space rock that was perhaps as much as 3.3 yards (3 meters) across.

A space rock is called an asteroid or meteoroid until it hits the Earth's atmosphere. The resulting fireball is then called a meteor until it hits the ground, at which point it is dubbed a meteorite.

The asteroid that would later impact California orbited the sun in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, making about three trips around our star in the time it takes Jupiter to orbit once. Such a ratio, known as a resonance, is common in the solar system ? some of?Jupiter's moons are in resonance?with each other, for example.

The asteroid's resonance was a little "off" from a perfect 3 to 1 ratio. At some point, Jupiter's strong gravity muscled the asteroid out of its normal orbit and sent it on a trip to the inner solar system. This pushed the asteroid into a new orbit that brought it in as far as Mercury's orbit when it got closest to the sun.

LG kicks of CES with 55-inch 'ultra-HD' TV

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? LG unveiled a 55-inch TV that sports "ultrahigh-definition" resolution with more than 8 million pixels, kicking off what is likely to be a mini-obsession with the latest super-clear format at the annual International CES gadget show.

The model announced Monday is the smallest in a 2013 lineup that includes 65-inch and 84-inch versions. But the smaller size ? and likely smaller price tag ? begins the parade of TV makers that are seeking to bring ultrahigh definition to the masses.

Also known as "4K," ultrahigh-definition screens are 3,840 pixels wide and 2,160 pixels tall and have four times as many pixels as the current HD screens.

For a few years, there won't likely be a mainstream standard for getting native ultra-HD movies and TV shows to the screen either by disc or broadcast.

LG said these new TVs will have upscaling technology that takes images of lesser quality and renders them in high detail. The Korean electronics maker also said it has formed an ultra-HD content agreement with Korea's top broadcaster, KBS, and is seeking out deals with other global content providers. The company offered no specifics.

Along with the lineup of higher-resolution TVs, LG unveiled a new Magic Remote, which acts like a wand that is sensitive to motion and is used to navigate on-screen menus. LG said the new model responds better to natural speech.
