Infants discover new things daily with new milestones and independence increasing. Babies begin to sit for longer periods, crawl, use their hands to wave bye bye and play peek-a-boo, and they love to play with interactive toys. Choosing age-appropriate toys is essential to the development and safety of your baby. You want to encourage the use of a variety of stimulating toys for fine motor skills and cognitive development that introduce shapes, colors and music. Balls, cars, dolls, blocks, musical instruments and stacking toys are all ideal.
I was recently introduced to the Little Tikes DiscoverSounds Shape, Sort & Scatter toy which is a fabulous toy for infants 9+. The toy features colorful blocks with cute fish faces that familiarize baby to basic shapes; circle, heart, star, octagon, square and triangle and basic colors; red, yellow, green, blue, purple, green and orange. The DiscoverSounds Shape, Sort & Scatter is shaped like a fish bowl sitting on a base.
The toy offers 3 modes to grow with your baby.
Mode 1: Free play. This is what your infant will start on as baby can drop shapes into the top of the bowl or can insert the shapes into the correct opening around the bowl. When dropping into the top of the bowl, the toy will count as the block is dropped. When putting the shapes through the holes it will say ?that?s the yellow star.?
Mode 2: Directed Play. Once infant becomes accustomed to shapes and colors, they can interact with this mode as the toy directs the child to insert a color or shape into the matching hole.
Mode 3: Race the Clock. More challenging as a 6 second countdown begins for child to help put the fish back in the bowl. The toy will mention a color or shape and the child needs to put into the correct matching hole.
There is a dial on the base of the toy to select the mode and a Little Tikes button to push to begin the games. I like that on directed and race play the fish bowl will glow green when correct and red when incorrect. When the child chooses an incorrect block the floor of the fishbowl drops, releasing the blocks to start again. Children can also press the Little Tikes button to start again, releasing the blocks.
This toy is fun for infants offering numerous activities to keep them engaged. I like that it grows with baby and how it praises baby saying good job, yay, correct, yippee and repeats once baby chooses the correct block. Also, when baby chooses the wrong shape/color, it will release the blocks however will start back at the color baby chose wrong.
This is a wonderful age-appropriate toy for infants and also includes a volume switch, language selection (English, French or Spanish) and an on/off button. The toy will turn off automatically after 30 seconds of inactivity.
